Excellent Pad
February 20, 2012
This pad is excellent for sleeping on while camping, or even anytime you need a mat. I use this anytime I need to take my own bed. Lying on my side to do feel the ground like any other mat I have. The only issue is the size is almost to big.

Bigger than I expected it to be... nice for car camping but way too heavy for even a short backpacking trip...it's so big you can't even tie it up on your pack...
Pros: Build qualityExtremely Comfy, but very large!

I purchased this mattress as a possible step in for short hike trips as it seemed to be much more comfy than my old Prolite 4. In fact it is extrmely comfy and would sleep nearly as well as a bed. The construction and quality is up to par with the other products that Thermarest makes and by just looking at it and spreading it out in my living room I think it would be very durable. I knew it was big and heavy when I purchased it but not quite as big and heavy as it actually is. I was thinking that I could strap it on the outside of my pack where I usually put my tent but it is much too big for that. It would be an awesome car camping mattrees where space and weight aren't an issue but for backpacking (even short trips) it just doesn't work! Great for comfort but not for strapping on your back!
Pros: Build qualityA Great Night of Sleep

This is an extremely comfortable sleeping pad! I would even say as much as my mattress at home. That being said, itÂ’s size limits it to car camping. If car camping is on the agenda I don't think you can go wrong with this pad. Using my knees while rolling it up has allowed me to get it down to around 20% less then shipped size. By the way, this purchase was the only way to get my spouse to go camping.

Very comfortable, soft and luxurious. Was a cold night and kept me very warm. On the large side and somewhat expensive, but worth the cost, if you have the room

Therm-a-rest's 2010 design features a memory foam top, rather than the old foam top from previous years. It also sees a bump up in pad thickness, so you can customize the firmness of your mat without bottoming out your hipbone for us side sleepers. I have a temperamental back when it comes to sleeping on the ground and this mat definitely helps alleviate some of the pain that would normally arise after camping. Its downfall is the size. It's pretty massive when rolled up. You'll have to set aside a large space in your car for the mat, but it is worth it, as it is much easier to fall asleep than using a lighter, thinner backpacking mat. The built in compression straps are convenient, but cumbersome having them permanently stuck on the mat. You're laying on some of the buckles, but with the pad's thickness it probably wont hurt the bottom of your tent. The air valve on mine seems to face straight down into the ground getting it dirty and rubbing on the tent floor while rolling up. Maybe it just needs some readjustment, but it seems like a strange design. I've used a wide variety of therm-a-rest's pads and this one is obviously most comfortable if you're car camping or need to sleep in the back of your truck/suv. Its design just needs some fine tuning and maybe another upgrade in the "memory foam" quality. Personally I have two sleeping setups, one for car camping and another ultra-light setup for backpacking. If you go that route and own multiple mats, then this is your bed for car camping.
