Great Lid
May 06, 2012

I have pretty thin hair and don’t like to wear ball caps so i consider myself a Beanie connoisseur. I have had allot of different beanies from cheap to expensive. What i have found is there is always something I don’t like... doesn’t fit over my ears right, makes my head sweat, is too thin, is too thick, the seams look funny, too tight, too loose. I can honestly say this SmartWool Lid has a perfect snug, but not too snug... warm, but not too warm. Sleek, yet covers my ears perfect and doesn’t look like a du-rag. Handles moisture very well. The only negative is don’t wash it in the washing machine... it will stretch out and loose its snug feel. This is THE beanie for you if you have had trouble getting one you are happy with. Try it... If you don’t like it, which is not likely, return it. I have bought three... charcoal and blue and had to replace one that stretched, but had it for two years. Also looks good with a shirt and tie.

snug but cozy
February 22, 2012

I purchased this hat this past winter and found it fairly useful. Not at all bulky, it provided moderate warmth. Definitely a bit on the snug side - best for small to medium sized heads! Would recommend.

Pros: Build quality, Performance, Ease of use
Cons: sizing a bit small

Don't Jump on the Wagon Yet...
December 19, 2011

I would expect the material to be yarn of 100% wool, but it turns out to be a piece of wool cloth. Therefore, the elasticity is poor, and the warmth is much less. In addition, it is single-layer. If the northern wind is blowing, this lid does not keep you warm at all. You could spend less to purchase a much better quality of POLO lid when it is on sale. The only reason I kept it is because I threw away the packing plastic bag. By the time when I dig it out from the trash can, the labels on the bag are stained with sauce... For anybody who is driven by the quality will not appreciate the product unless the price is 50% less. I do like the color (natural white) though; actually that was the reason why I ordered it. Unfortunately, I was quiet dissapointed by the quality associated with the high price.

Cozy, lightweight, pocket-size
July 24, 2011

Fits in a pocket for easy warmth, and thin enough to wear under a bicycle helmet--which I do most days in the winter. Not so thick that it will cause sweat to build up--this hat seems better for being active or for quick trips outside, not for something like ice-fishing or sitting at a Vikings game, where such situations probably call for something thicker.

Warm winter hat
June 12, 2011

Would recommend this hat as a simple, functional warm winter hat that is especially good under a hard shell hood for very cold windy/wet days. Fits snugly but not too tightly on a medium size head. Have experienced some minor pilling and fraying, and a little bit of wooly scratchiness, but not bad.

Pros: Great design, Performance, Great value

February 16, 2011

I love smartwool stuff and it is usually never itchy. until now. this thing itches my head like crazy. otherwise I'd have given it five stars. I'm bald so if you have hair it might not bother you. like I said, I have tons of smartwool and nothing else has ever itched. until this. oops.

Replacement for a lost lid
February 16, 2011

I recently lost a Smartwool Lid and was really bummed as it had become my favorite winter hat. The Lid fits my tiny head like a warm hug, can be worn under a bike helmet without any bulk or annoying seams, and is not scratchy or itchy. I was very happy to find a replacement on Altrec. The color is slightly different from the first one I owned, and has a longer fit, which is good because it covers my ears unlike the first one. I have a difficult time finding hats that fit my small head, but this one does the trick. While it was a little expensive, I didn't mind spending the money for a hat that I wear all of the time.

Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, warm
Cons: Cost

Hats off to you, Smartwool
January 12, 2011

I have purchased three of these hats (two black--one was misplaced--and one in brown) and I loved them all. The are thin overall as some have noted and do not block winds if they are blowing in with any sort of anger, but they definitely keep my head warm (I need all the insulation I can get) and pack down small to fit in a pocket of jacket on the trail or out and about the city. I have noticed significant differences in the cut of each hat. Two have fit on the tight side, which is a good thing for me, but one was a bit larger so it's a little sloppy on the head in places (that sounds perverted.) I find these to be my go to hats--without question. Not to mention, I got a great deal at Altrec.com. Take care, Pillow Pants

Tight fit
December 05, 2010

I am a big fan of wool and that is the reason I purchased this lid. This is a nice hat for warm and non-windy winter days and especially good if you are active. It would be nice if it was a bit roomier and thicker. Make sure it is what you are looking for.

This is exactly what I was looking for in a hat. Material on the thin side (not bulky), warm, minimal itch factor, comfortable, nice looking. I have a fairly large head and the fit is good. There is enough stretch in the material that I'm assuming it would fit someone with a smaller head equally as well. There is only one seam that runs from the top of the hat down the left side and it is nearly undetectable and there is no gathering of the fabric.

Good News Bad News
November 15, 2010

Pros: Warmer than the Beanie Looks good Works like it supposed to: Warm, wicking, comfy No "hair/head" smell Fits over my Beanie for double warmth (also means it's a little looser than the beanie when worn by itself, which is ok, b/c i think the Beanie is a little too tight) Cons: The seam on the inside leave an imprint ring around my head (I shave my head). I don't care though. Material is a little coarser than the beanie "One size fits all" really? Does it ever?

Cool Lid
November 08, 2010

I had a feeling this would be a good product, and it turns out that it is. It has a nice, snug fit to it and keeps my ears warm when it is cold. My ears are sensitive, and I work in a windy city, so it keeps the wind out nicely. This doesn't itch like a lot of other beanies. I would recommend this product for sure.

Pros: Great design, Performance, Ease of use, Great value, looks good on me

the perfect hat
September 06, 2010

my smartwool lid goes everywhere i do. whether i'm hiking, paddling or just tooling around town, my head is always comfortably toasty and protected from the elements. when i lost my first lid after a hiking tumble, where my head collided with some significant rocks, i immediately went online to purchase another. a snug fit, without feeling restrictive. great smartwool insulation and quality.

Wool: the perfect insulator.
August 27, 2010

I bought this simple hat to wear on cold weather walks/runs. Perfectly snug, but not too tight. I love wool because it lasts a very long time and is lightweight. Some wools can be itchy, but this hat is soft and comfortable.

An exceptional wool hat for winter
August 26, 2010

This hat works to keep my head warm and protected against light rain, fog, wind and cold. It is exceptional because it is light and feels like it is wind-proof. I use it everyday when I go to the ocean in San Francisco - where there is always fog, mist, wind and cold. After losing my first one, I searched high and low on the internet for a 2nd one. My original purchase was $35-40, so this is not only an exceptional hat, it is an exceptional bargain right now. Enjoy!

Just what I use for a lot of my outdoor activities. I need the cap to keep its insulating abilities and this does the job.

If you want to stay warm, even when wet, go wool. This hat (like everything Smartwool is fantastic. It's VERY lightweight, but exceptionally warm.

GREAT buy!
March 30, 2010

Bought this hat for my boyfriend and boy did I do good! He says it's comfortable and warm, without being itchy, (he would know as he is bald)! It fits him perfectly and is easy to care for.

Luv it!!!
February 16, 2010

I've been looking for a snug fitting beanie and this fits the bill. It doesn't have the extra material flopping around the top of my head and it's snug around the ears. It was a slightly itchy but after a few minutes that feeling went away. The weave and material are of excellent quality!
