Good Layer for the In-Between
April 12, 2012
This is a great layer for when the weather is not cold enough for a jacket, but not warm enough to just wear a shirt. It is a performace garment, so fits a little snug. I usually wear a medium in Patagonia clothing, but the large is a better fit if you want this to have a little room for your clothing underneath.
Pros: Build quality, Lasts forever, PerformanceDoes what it was designed to

Overall the R1 zip up does exactly what it set out to. With that in mind, you need to know that the fleece is not a hang around the house winter warmer, although it does this job fairly well. The R1 is designed to be used to move moisture and keep you dry during high exertion cold weather activities. It does this job superbly. During a recent winter ride I was I got soaked in a wet rain snow mix and was freezing in my wet jersey and arm warmers. Once the rain stopped I ditched the wet clothes, put on the R1, and rode another 6 miles warm and snug without overheating. Use it for what it's intended for and this is an excellent product.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, PerformanceThe Best!

This isn't my first R1. I had to come back for more! The weight of this high low garment is the best! You can layer it with other tops to create an unbelievable warmth. Or wear alone when the weather is warmer. I travel to warm and cold climates and the R1 goes with me every time! A fine Patagonia product!
Pros: Great design, Build quality, PerformanceFull zip offers full vent vs. full warms

OK....so the last thing I really needed was more patagonia garments in my closet...but...having the R1 Balaclava convinced me of the square checked fleece pattern....when worn snug, the garment presses tightly against skin (or wool base layer) and creates slight friction and a gentle warming affect. The full zip allows complete and continuous zipping/venting to desired needs. You'd never guess it, but an essential base layer next to skin or, as my favorite, with a wool layer first. Go for it...
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of useGreat Product

This is an extremely comfortable thin layer fleece that works as a light jacket or a layer under a heavier coat. The check pattern is great for mobility. The fit is typical for Patagonia; Large for 6'1", 180. I can not speak to the durability since I have not had this product very long. I recommend this product and will definitely purchase another when this wears out.
Pros: Great design, Build qualityGreat for Layering

I've had the R1 for a couple months now and I mainly use it as a mid layer. Unlike most layer jackets that I have purchased in the past, the neck is very soft and comfortable when fully zipped because the top of the zipper is covered with soft material eliminating the annoying zipper rub when moving your head back and forth. I've used it to run around town but it does not slide off and on very easily over normal clothes. As usual, it is another quality Patagonia product: fits great and expected to last a long time.
Pros: Great design, Build qualitynice light weight fleece, high quality jacket

I bought the Patagonia R1 jacket as light weight fleece for 2 purposes: first to wear around the house or around town when there is a chill in the air. Secondly as an under jacket when it gets cold out there. Not so cold that I need urb-warmth, but when I want the advantage of layers. The R1 is a stylist jacket and looks great. The red color is more cranberry color than a true (bright) red. My only concern is that after a season's wear, the jacket will show excessive warm. Cautious recommendation.
Pros: Great design, Build qualityGreat fit

This is a very comfortable fleece. It is lightweight and not too baggy like a lot of other jackets. This has a modern fit. I don't love the subtle checkered pattern in the weave but will live with it because the fit is so awesome.
Impressive

I heard so many great things about Patagonia's R1, I had to try it out for myself. The full zip is awesome. Suprisingly warm. Very stylish. So lightweight I can barely tell it's there except for how warm it is. I can't imagine how warm the R3 or R4 would be, but this should suffice as a great layering piece. Patagonia quality is unmatched. I wish I would have purchased one sooner.
Pros: Great design, PerformanceR1 Full Zip

The jacket is very breathable and very warm for its weight. The cut is a bit bigger than my (older) pullovers, though still quite trim. It is a great layering piece. I wear a light or mid weight capilene t- shirt underneath depending on the temperature. Great go to jacket for mixed weather.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Great valuegood investment

This jacket goes a long way for the money. The overall quality is great. It's perfect as a midlayer under a shell for downhill skiing, but is also great to wear on its own in warmer weather. Without a protective shell, it doesn't provide much wind protection. The sleeves seem to run a little long, but otherwise is seems tts for Patagonia clothing. Overall, another solid, high quality jacket from Patagonia. Definitely worth the money!
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Lasts forever, Performance, Ease of useGreat layer

The R1 is very comparable to a lightweight fleece. The microfiber outside is soft and not as bulky as a regular fleece. Easy to layer under a shell. Fits great under my Patagonia Storm Jacket, Torrentshell, and Guide Jacket as an extra layer. I also wear it at work much like a sweater on cold days. I'm 5'9" and 160 lbs and the medium fits me well. It does have a slim fit that is tough to layer over anything with any bulk. The sleeves are a tad on the long side for me but not annoying. Overall a great jacket and I would strongly recommend it.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, Performance, Ease of use, Great valuegreat jacket

Excellent 3 season jacket. Nice snug fit, warm unless there is wind or extended exposure to temps below 40-45 degrees F. Good for layering in colder weather.
Pros: Great design, Build quality, PerformanceExcellent jacket!

The R1 is unbelievable. It is crazy warm for how light it is and it is the most comfortable thing I own. Buy one right now
Very pleased

The R1 jacket was just the thing for cold Chicago winters. Also, I was looking for something warmer for backpacking in September and their simple synchilla was chilly once the sun set. This is considerably warmer. It is a "slim fit" and they mean it - a reg. fit on another Patagonia jacket is considerably bulkier. Altrec got it to me quickly - absolutely no problems.
