After falling in love with my Atomos 50, I went ahead and picked up the Aether 70 for backpacking and mountaineering purposes. Although I've yet to take it into an alpine environment, it's been flawless on several multi-day backpacking trips this past summer/fall. All compartments and straps are logically placed and no redundancy; the status quo for Osprey, from my experience. Favorite features include access to the main compartment via three separate points: the upper draw string, the J-shaped zippers on the middle of the outside and the sleeping bag access at the bottom of the outside. The trekking pole loops were also handy. A few things that weren't necessarily "cons" but that I did notice: heating of the waist strap didn't really help much in terms of comfort for me, and probably wasn't worth the effort. Also, the detachable pack on the top is marketed as a summit pack/ day pack but I felt it was lacking in capacity for my purposes. I remedied this by purchasing the Daylite pack, which can be integrated into the Aether using existing straps on both products. In addition to adding capacity (~13 L) to the Aether, it also proved to be a much more capable summit/day pack. Overall, an awesome pack though. Would highly recommend it to anyone and I can't imagine it failing me when I eventually use if for mountaineering.

Just bought the 2009 model on the "outlet" portion of the Altrec site ($100 off), and I couldn't be more pleased. I've hiked primarily in a 2005 Deuter 65, and decided to go for an upgrade before heading to Tanzania and South Africa for a month. The pack fits like a glove, and after a few quick hikes there's no rubbing or chafing (size S, 5'7", 140lbs), and I haven't even had the belt custom molded yet. Also the pack is extremely light and breathable, and with Osprey's compression system it can hold a variety of weight without looking bulky. I also bought the Osprey MEDIUM Rain cover and it is plenty large enough to cover the pack and the bedroll. Don't be tempted to go any larger! Overall the pack is a steal on the outlet portion of the site, try to catch them while you still can!
simple, sturdy pack... minimal features

ergonomically, osprey is dead on. the airscape back ventilation is bomber and the foam on shoulder straps is dense and wide. the pack is narrow and close to the body. the only drawbacks are no inner pockets ( like a small envelope to hold keys etc.) or no zippered pockets internally to hold valuables. also, the frame curves away from head allowing ample space, but this infringes on packing space. the aluminum frame juts into main compartment and makes packing above this line difficult. the pack has good compression straps if loaded fully, but not much capacity to compress if partially loaded.
Great Pack

Great pack for carrying heavy loads, it has a nice balance that moves most of the weight to your waist. Very roomy too; the new front access zipper to the main pocket is a nice new feature!

So far I've only used it for 2 weeks. I loaded it up with 45 pounds and walk the dog 3-4 miles every night to get in shape for summer hiking season. Took a few days to get it all adjusted properly. I could have taken it somewhere for a proper fitting and saved the trouble but I like to figure it out myself. I'm really quite pleased - very solid pack without too many compromises for weight savings.

Without a doubt the most adjustable load bearing pack I've owned.
Quality construction and excellent materials

Every year I hike the Grand Canyon and I have been using a 10+ year old other brand pack that never quite fit me correctly. Last year the interior waterproofing started peeling off and covered my gear with flakes of material and that was my trigger for buying a new pack. I had previously bought an Osprey travel pack for a Peru trip and was extremely happy with the quality of material and construction. After 2 weeks of planes, trains, buses and boats the Osprey pack still looked new! My GC trip is not until April but I have loaded up my new Aether pack and it is very comfortable even before having the hip belt molded. I selected this Osprey pack for the bottom zippered sleeping bag compartment. I do not want to unload my entire pack just to get to the sleeping bag. Looking forward to many years of use from this pack!
