Great knife for rescue
February 18, 2008
I would say this knife is great as far as safety and kayak rescue but it does have it's limitations as far as an overall camping knife. But that is not what the description states. It is a great knife and it has actually kept me from sticking myself with the blunt end. I would recomend this knife. I am glad I bought it for my trip down the Suwannee in March.
Sharp Buy

I am a seasoned kayaker. SCUBA diver and an all around waterman. I have taken this knife absolutely everywhere since I bought it, and I can not imagine a trip without it. Actually, I bought two. One is mounted on the deck of my expedition kayak and the other goes with me everywhere. The blunt tip is a valuable asset and a real safety minded design. The serrated blade cuts through rope quickly and really holds it's edge. The knife is very lightweight and low profile. The handle is easy to grip, even with gloves on. This is a great knife at a great price.
Excellent, but where to put it?

I like this knife a lot. The blunt tip prevents you from stabbing the wrong thing, and the serrated edge will cut through anything in an instant. The knife is just long enough without being too long, and is so light its hard to tell its there. Its very well designed except for the holstering the sheath. While I can put it on my rescue belt if I am wearing a rescue PFD (and believe me, this knife never will come off where it is put on), the sheath is simply too big to put onto a lash tab. When I am not wearing a rescue PFD (and not coincidentally need maximum mobility) I have nowhere to put it. This is my single complaint.
Great safe knife

On the water, you know you are supposed to have a knife for all those unexpected dangerous situations we have all been taught could occur, but why make things worse with a pointy knife which may have to be used to release yourself from river ropes or tangles. The Shorty has a blunt tip (great flathead screwdriver) but otherwise is sharp, light and "always open". The sheath is easily attached to any PFD and the knife itself is easy to withdraw from the sheath. No fumbling to open as with other folding river knives.

This knife is perfect for kayaking! I am a recreational paddler and this knife covers all of my needs and then some. Get the yellow handle, it is easy to find in case you drop it, I did.
Price is right...

I am a kayaking guide out of Beverly, Essex, Marblehead and Newburyport, MA and i got this knife at the biggining of my second season. This knife is great and for the size of it, the price is fantastic and the quality of the knife is exsactly what one would exspect from Gerber products. BUY IT!
