I've been using other types of rigs on my Dakota for carrying bikes, including hitch-mounts, propping them up in the box, etc., then saw another truck hauling bikes with a Dakine tailgate pad. So I bought and installed one and find that it works great. Easy to load the bikes and provides good protection to bikes and truck.

Works great, the only thing I could ask to improve is some quick clips to secure the pad instead of having to weave it through the buckles every time... unless I've missed something.

Very easy to put on and take off. Keeps the tailgate and downtube of the bike from getting dented.

Stop using that moldy old furniture pad!!

Absolute best pad of its kind. I used to use a furniture pad that I left in the bed of my truck all the time. It didn't occur to me how nasty it had gotten, always wet or dirty. The Dakine pad is rubberized so bikes slip on and stay in place easily for short shuttles without any straps, but also strap down and don't jiggle a bit for longer trips. Plus the pockets are great for storing straps and small tools. Stop wasting time and get one already!
